The Pirates found themselves in an early hole after Virginia went up 3-0 in the first inning due to a three-run Macee Eaton home run. The Pirates quickly responded in the second inning when Andrea Perez made it a 3-1 game off a single up the middle. The two sides would trade runs once again to make it a 4-2 game off a bases-loaded walk by Katey Brennan in their next respective bating frames.

The game got away from the Pirates in the fifth inning, however, and that sealed their fate. A two-run home run, in addition to two more RBI, put Virginia out in front 8-2. A spark of hope came in the top of the sixth when the Pirates once again loaded the bases. Brennan logged an RBI single, Olivia Gilbert walked in a run and Hannah Alexander provided a two-run RBI single to make it an 8-6 game. The Pirates would not manage to come back, however. A three-run sixth inning by the Cavaliers shut the door and the Pirates as they fell 11-6.
Game Two vs Hofstra
In their second game of the day, the Pirates' opposition struck first, once again, to go up 2-0. However, the Pirates responded in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. Hofstra attacked Seton Hall's pitching in the second inning, putting up a six-run frame to go up 8-1. In the bottom half, however, the Pirates responded with their own five-run inning. The Pirates loaded the bases and took advantage of their plate discipline. Taylor Hill and Alexander combined for three RBI in the frame, helping the Pirates cut the deficit back to two, 8-6. Brennan made it a one-run game in the seventh after her RBI single cut the deficit to 8-7. The next inning, from Erin Howard tied the game 8-8 after four innings with her own RBI single.

The tie would not last, however, as the Lions outscored the Pirates 5-3 over the next two innings despite Kelsey Carr providing a two-run double. In the bottom of the seventh, down 13-11, the Pirates had a chance to tie the game with one out after Howard laced a double down the left field line. Caroline Hobbes hit a double as well to put the Pirates down one with one out left. A pop-up would end the game the Pirates fell to Hofstra 13-12.
