South Orange, N.J. — Freshman Aiden Robbins (Yardley, Pa.) went 5-for-9 with four RBI, two home runs and three runs scored in two games and Seton Hall saw two solid pitching performances from its starters in a doubleheader split with St. John's on Saturday at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium where the Pirates took game one in 10 innings, 3-1, but couldn't claim the nightcap, 7-3.
Robbins' two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th walked off game one and his two-run shot in game two tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth. Jackson Balzan (Medford, N.J.) allowed two hits and no earned runs with a season-high eight strikeouts in six innings in game one where he earned a no decision. Cole Hansen (Skillman, N.J.) tossed 6.2 innings, allowed three runs and struck out four.
How It Happened
The Pirates opened the scoring in game one when Kyle Lyons (West Chester, Pa.) scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second after he had reached on a fielder's choice. Balzan, who had struck out the side in the top of the first, did so again in the top of the second as he fanned eight of the first 10 St. John's batters that he faced.
Seton Hall looked to extend its lead in the bottom of the fourth where Danny Melnick (Hamilton, N.J.) led of the inning with a double and Cole Zak (Cleveland, Ohio) followed him up with a double. After Lyons was hit by an itch that loaded the bases with one out, the next two Pirates couldn't get a run across. That missed opportunity would come back to haunt the Pirates in the top of the sixth where St. John's tied up the score at 1-1 on a two-out RBI single.
After six solid frames from Balzan, Michael Gillen (Rochelle Park, N.J.) came out of the bullpen and tossed four scoreless innings with no walks and two strikeouts that kept the score tied. In the bottom of the 10th, Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) drew a one-out walk that brought Robbins to the plate. Already with two hits on the day, Robbins' third of the day went over the left field fence for a two-run home run that clinched the game one victory for Seton Hall.
The Pirates got on the board first once again in game two where a two-out single through the left side off the bat of Melnick scored Robbins easily from third base. After retiring the side in order in the top of the first inning, Hansen worked around trouble in the second where two runners got on and another baserunner in the third. The Red Storm got on the board in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly that tied up the score at 1-1.
Hansen worked a scoreless sixth but St. John's was able to bring home two runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run double. The Pirates answered in the bottom of the eighth where Robbins clubbed a two-run home run to center field that knotted up the score once again, 3-3. However, St. John's countered with a four-run top of the ninth that put the game out of reach at 7-3.
