Carr Knocks in Seven, Pirates Sweep DePaul for Ninth Straight BIG EAST Win

How it Happened
After a brief rain delay in the top of the second inning, the Pirates came back and went to work. Hannah Alexander (Wrightstown, N.J.) got the scoring started with a single to center, followed later by two runs scoring on a fielder's choice hit into by Ashly Colonnetta (Cypress, Texas). Two batters later with the bases loaded, Carr launched a long grand slam to center field to extend the lead to 7-0.
DePaul would battle its way back, scoring three times in the second and in the third to pull within one. The Blue Demons nearly had the tying run score in the third on a double, however Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.) made a perfect relay throw from short left field to cut down the run at the plate.
The Pirates would cushion the lead in the fifth by adding four more runs. With runners at the corners, Marisa Pla (San Clemente, Calif.) slapped the ball to third and legged out an infield single to make it an 8-6 game. Later on, Carr stepped up with the bases loaded for the second time on the day. The junior nearly had her second grand slam of the game, as she launched a long fly ball off the left field fence to clear the bases.
The Blue Demons answered in the bottom of the sixth with three runs of their own to pull within two, but the Pirates would pull away in the seventh. Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) lined a single to center, and a misplay by the centerfielder allowed two runs to score to pad the lead.
Wingo's hit would prove to be important, as the Blue Demons brought two across on a two-run triple in the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate. Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) would avoid any further damage, getting a groundout to shortstop to end the game.
Notes & Numbers
- Carr's seven RBI tie the program record for most RBI in a single-game, matching the mark set by Danielle DeStaso against St. Bonaventure on Feb. 8, 2013.
- The Pirates have now won nine consecutive BIG EAST games, matching the program mark set back in 1999.
- The grand slam by Carr was the second by a Pirate this season, the first since Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.) hit one against Creighton on March 24.
- Wingo went 2-for-4 on the day to extend her hitting streak to 10 and her on-base streak to 25. Wingo now has a base hit in 24 of her last 25 games.
- The Pirates have scored eight runs or more in five of their last six games.
The Pirates wrap up their eight-game road swing with a doubleheader at Marist on Tuesday beginning at 2 p.m.
