Game One: Seton Hall 14, Drexel 1 (5 innings)
How it Happened
- Seton Hall came out swinging, putting up a five spot in the first inning. Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) brought home the first run on an RBI double, followed by Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.) reaching on an error to plate two runs. After Hannah Alexander (Wrightstown, N.J.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Ashly Colonnetta (Cypress, Texas) brought home the fifth run of the frame with a single to right field.
- The Pirates began to flex their muscles in the second inning. After Gilbert hit an infield single to make it 6-0, Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.) launched her first career home run to left field to make the lead 8-0.
- Two more left the park in the third inning as The Hall continued to grow its lead. The first homer came off the bat of Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.), whose solo shot made it 9-0. Later in the inning, Wingo crushed a three-run homer to center to increase the advantage up to 12-0.
- After the Dragons got a run back in the fourth, the Pirates put two more up on the board in the fifth. Miranda Arruda (Pawcatuck, Conn.) lined a double to the wall in left center, plating Amber Johnson (Belfair, Wash.) and Molly Mitman (Schnecksville, Pa.).
- All nine starters in the Pirates' lineup reached base safely, with each of the top seven batters recording at least one hit.
- For the fourth time over the last six games, each of the top five hitters in Seton Hall's order recorded at least one hit.
- Perez's home run was the first of her career and her RBI total on the season now grows to 13.
- Nineteen different Pirates appeared in the game, including the first appearances of the season for Grace Dawson (Millstone, N.J.) and Mitman. Both Dawson and Mitman, along with Caroline Hobbes (Bay Shore, N.Y.), picked up their first career base hits.
- Sydney Babik (Gilbert, Ariz.) cruised to the win in the circle, allowing one run on five hits and striking out two to improve to 7-3 on the season. She has allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of her last five outings.
How it Happened
- After three scoreless frames to open the ballgame, The Hall struck for three in the fourth inning. With two on and one out, Gilbert singled to left field to score Hill with the first run of the game. Perez followed with a check-swing dribbler down the first base line that stayed fair and scored the second run of the inning. Next, Jenna Blevins (Flat Rock, Mich.) hit into a fielder's choice to bring home Gilbert with the third Pirate run.
- Drexel was able to get two runs back in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run single from Mia Garza to pull back within a run.
- In the sixth, the Pirates would tally three more to cushion their lead. Two of those runs came courtesy of Hill, whose single to center made it a 5-2 game. Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) followed with an RBI single to make it a four run advantage.
- Smith came on in relief to pitch the final three innings to earn the save. Smith did not allow a run and struck out four while surrendering just one hit in her outing.
- The Pirates have now won three straight games, nine of their last 10, 14 of their last 16 and 18 of their last 21. The 21-game stretch is the program's best since 1999.
- Wingo's season batting average now sits at .402. Only two Pirates have ever batted over .400 for a season. Wingo is batting .466 over her last 30 games.
- Smith's save was her second of the season and of her career.
- Kyra Kreuscher (Great River, N.Y.) got the start in the circle, pitching four innings and striking out three to improve to 3-1 on her freshman campaign.
The Pirates continue their road swing on Tuesday as they head to Philadelphia for a doubleheader against Drexel on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
