SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – A dominant pitching performance and timely defense helped the Seton Hall softball team (18-15-1, 5-4 BIG EAST) win its second-straight conference rubber game with a 1-0 victory over Georgetown (11-23, 4-5) on Sunday afternoon at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field. Hurlers Reganne Camp (Bloomington, Ill.) and Chrisa Head (Lewisville, Texas) combined to blank the Hoyas while Hailey Arteaga (Upland, Calif.) notched the game's lone RBI and recorded a game-ending outfield assist.
With the win the Pirates have won back-to-back BIG EAST series and improve to 5-4 on the year in league play, holding crucial tiebreakers over both DePaul and Georgetown. Camp and Head combined to strike out six Hoyas and did not walk a batter while the Pirate defense did not commit an error on the day.
Turning Point
The Pirate pitchers matched zeroes with GU ace Anna Brooks Pacha over the first four innings, before The Hall finally broke through tin the bottom of the fifth. Sara Foster (Long Beach, Calif.) led off the inning with a single to left and stole second to move into scoring position. After a walk and a single loaded the bases, Brooks got a strike out bring up Arteaga. The freshman lifted a fly ball to left, putting enough into it to allow Foster to scamper home from third and put The Hall up 1-0.
In the top of the seventh, Ciara Sullivan smacked a pinch-hit double with one away to put the tying run on for the Hoyas. After Head induced a pop up for the second out, Malloy Bellknap blooped a single to left. Arteaga came up with the ball firing, tossing a strike to the plate to nab Sullivan and end the contest. The game-winning outfield assist was the first assist of the freshman's career.
