Late Rally Comes Up Short In Setback To Butler
4/30/2017 3:41:00 PM | Softball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Despite a valiant late rally, the Seton Hall softball team (22-22-1, 7-11 BIG EAST) dropped a rubber game to Butler (20-27, 8-9 BIG EAST) on Sunday at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field. The 4-3 setback marked the conclusion of a three-game BIG EAST set with the Bulldogs this weekend.
The Pirates scored twice in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the final frame before falling just short. The Hall cranked out nine hits in the setback but left 12 runners on base and were just 3-for-13 (.231) with runners in scoring position.
Turning Points
Butler took an early lead with a three-run top of the third and extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth. The Pirates got one back in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single from Noel Lent (Yaphank, N.Y.) to cut the lead back to three.
After a pair of scoreless relief innings from Chrisa Head (Lewisville, Texas) the Pirates mounted their comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh. Following a walk and a single with one away, Hailey Arteaga (Upland, Calif.) and Head came up with back-to-back RBI singles to slim the lead to 4-3. Butler then made a move to the bullpen, bringing on Mikeila Boroff who got a strikeout and a soft line drive to short to escape the late jam and secure the series for the Bulldogs.
