Walkden Homers Twice In Rubber Match Setback To VU
3/26/2017 1:17:00 PM | Softball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall softball team (14-11, 1-2 BIG EAST) rallied from five runs down and took a late lead before eventually falling to Villanova (13-9, 2-1) in a BIG EAST rubber match on Sunday morning at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field. Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) had a huge day for the Pirates in the setback, homering twice and driving in four runs.
The loss comes after the Pirates and Wildcats split a doubleheader on Saturday. The three-game weekend set marked the start of BIG EAST conference play for both sides.
Turning Points
Villanova scored in each of the first four innings to build an early 6-1 lead, but the Pirates rallied back with a crooked number in the bottom of the fifth. Valerie Suto (Mercerville, N.J.) got the scoring started with an RBI infield single, and two batters later Walkden blasted a three-run shot to right-center field and leveled the contest at 6-6.
The Pirates took their first lead in the bottom of the sixth, when Suto broke for second with runners on the corners allowing Ragen Reddick (Middlesex, N.J.) to come home on the back-end of a perfectly executed double-steal. Villanova was able to answer in the next half-inning, hitting back-to-back solo home runs to re-take the lead for good at 8-7.
Inside The Numbers
- The Pirates held an 8-7 edge in hits, while Villanova committed the game's only error
- The two sides combined for only seven left on base, four for VU and three for SHU
- The Hall went 4-for-6 (.667) with runners in scoring position
- Both sides went 3-for-3 on the basepaths, with Noel Lent (Yaphank, N.Y.) swiping a bag for The Hall along with Reddick and Suto
- Suto went 3-for-3 and scored a run along with her RBI, while Reddick finished 2-for-3 and scored twice
- The Pirates fall to 36-40 all-time against Villanova in a series dating back to 1985
- Walkden's multi-homer outing was the fifth of her career and first since 2015
- The two-dinger effort was the second for a Pirate this season, with Chrisa Head (Lewisville, Texas) recording the feat on March 5 against East Carolina
- Walkden also notched her eighth multi-hit effort of the season and third game with at least three RBIs
- The junior slugger now has 36 career home runs, taking sole possession of second in program history
- With eight long balls this season, Walkden has matched her 2016 home run total
- In three BIG EAST games, Reddick is hitting .600 with four doubles – she was batting .276 with two doubles in her prior 21 contests
- Lent and Walkden have both reached base safely in seven-straight contests
The Pirates take a brief jaunt out of BIG EAST play and host Fordham for a non-league tilt on Tuesday, March 28.
