WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Seton Hall University softball team was swept in a doubleheader at Georgetown University, falling 6-1 in game one and 2-0 in game two on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
With the series win, Georgetown clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Championship while the Pirates saw their postseason hopes come to an end. Entering the weekend Seton Hall could clinch a BIG EAST berth by winning the series at Georgetown, or by securing one win coupled with Butler being swept in their final series against DePaul. However, the Bulldogs beat DePaul 4-2 on Saturday, handing the Blue Demons their first BIG EAST loss of the season.
Sophomore Jackie DiPietro (Horsham, Pa.), who entered the weekend leading the team with a .328 average, led the Pirates offensively, going 2-for-3 in game one and 1-for-3 in game two.
Freshman Lauren Fischer (Robbinsville, N.J.) allowed just two hits and one earned run in her game-two start, but was unable to pick up her second conference win of the year as the Pirates were also limited to just a pair of hits in the loss.
Georgetown 6, Seton Hall 1
Game one was ultimately decided very early on as Georgetown plated five of its six runs in the bottom of the first inning. However, four of those runs came after a controversial call at second base, where an initial out was overturned with the Hoyas taking full advantage of their extra opportunity.
Georgetown had the bases loaded with one out when Samantha Giovanniello singled to left field, scoring Grace Appelbe on the play. DiPietro initially threw to Meredith Henze (Elkton, Md.) at third, but not in time to catch Hannah Slovacek. Henze recognized that Megan Hyson had made the turn at second so she quickly fired over to Maria DeLuca (Cedar Grove, N.J.) at the bag and she made the tag to record the second out of the inning.
However, following the play the three umpires conferenced and decided to overturn the call. Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.) got the next batter to pop up, but two more singles resulted in four more runs in the inning and the Pirates were never able to recover from the big early deficit.
Junior Casey Moses (Lower Burrell, Pa.) came in to pitch in the second and allowed just one run on six hits with a pair of strikeouts over the next five innings. Outside of a Georgetown score in the sixth the most trouble Moses faced was runners at first and second with no outs in the third.
She escaped that jam by getting Taylor Henry to hit into a 6-4-3 double play and striking out pinch hitter Madeleine Giaquinto looking to end the inning.
Seton Hall's offense came in the form of a DeStaso solo home run to lead off the sixth. After falling behind in the count 0-2 she connected on a shot to straight-away center field, her eighth of the season and the 23rd of her career, which moved her into sole possession of third place in program history.
The Pirates threatened to cut further into the deficit as DiPietro singled up the middle and Whitney Jones (Skowhegan, Maine) was hit to put runners at first and second with two outs, but Faith Laudano (Islip, N.Y.) flew out to left to end the inning.
Georgetown 2, Seton Hall 0
Two runs in the bottom of the second made the different for Georgetown, as the Hoyas took advantage of a couple of SHU miscues early in the frame. Fischer hit Hyson to lead off the inning and Giovanniello reached on a fielder's choice that failed to catch Hyson at second, giving Georgetown two on with no outs.
Antilla drove in the first run of the game with an RBI ground out to second. With Giovanniello at third Antilla stole second, DeLuca came forward from second base to cut off the Laudano throw down but failed to secure the ball, allowing the run from third to score.
Seton Hall had just two base runners in the game. In the top of the second junior Colltey Sheldon (Peoria, Ariz.) doubled to left field with two away, but Jones popped up to second for the final out.
The Pirates' best scoring chance of the game came in the fifth inning. DiPietro lined a double to left center to lead off the inning, extending her hitting streak to five-straight games in the process. However, she never advanced with two foul outs aiding the Hoyas' ability to prevent a run.
Seton Hall and Georgetown will meet for game three on Sunday, May 4. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
