SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Freshman Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) led the offense as the Seton Hall baseball team defeated Wagner, 8-4, on Wednesday.Poduslenko started with regular shortstop D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) out with an ailing shoulder. The newcomer went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base.
Seton Hall (22-7) starter Anthony Pacillo (Lyndhurst, N.J.) improved to 3-0 with the victory. The freshman left-hander went 6.0 innings and gave up three earned runs, all of which came on a pair of Wagner home runs.
With the game locked in a scoreless tie, the Pirates broke out offensively in the bottom of the third inning. Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) led off the inning with a double to right field, and Poduslenko drove him in with an RBI single to center field. After Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) was hit by a pitch, the Pirates successfully executed a double steal to move two runners into scoring position. Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) followed with a single up the middle to score both runners. Jenkins stole third base and scored on a throwing error by the Wagner catcher to give Seton Hall a 4-0 advantage.
Jenkins finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a run scored and his BIG EAST-leading 17 stolen base of the season.
Wagner (5-20) got a run back in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by Shaun Flynn, but the Pirates put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the inning. Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) led off with his first career home run, a towering shot to left center field. With one out, Mogues hit his second double of the game and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Poduslenko again drove Mogues in with an RBI single to extend Seton Hall's lead to 6-1.
In the top of the sixth inning, Pacillo gave up a two-run home run to Wagner's Chris Smith to cut the Pirates' lead to 6-3, but the Pirates remained in control.
In the bottom of the seventh, Seton Hall added two more insurance runs to put the Pirate faithful at ease. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) walked to lead off and scored on an RBI double by Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.). Grimm tagged up and advanced to third on a fly ball by Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) and came in to score on a ground out by Falconi.
Seton Hall will return to action this Friday, April 11 for the first of a three-game series vs. the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
