SECAUCAS, N.J. – Seton Hall junior Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) was selected in the 14th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Minnesota Twins on Saturday. Granite was the 410th selection overall. Granite is one of four members of the 2013 Pirates to be drafted in the last two days, and the second by the Minnesota Twins. Seton Hall closer Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.) was selected in the seventh round by Minnesota, while ace right-handed pitcher Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 10th round. Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 18th round. The four Seton Hall selections are the most in a single draft since six were picked in 1997. In just three seasons, Granite has become one of the top leadoff men in Seton Hall baseball history. A starter in all 156 games he’s played in a Pirates’ uniform, he owns a career .299 batting average, 68 stolen bases and a .990 fielding percentage as Seton Hall’s everyday centerfielder. As a freshman, Granite was the table-setter during Seton Hall’s run to the 2011 BIG EAST Championship. Named Seton Hall’s Freshman Male Athlete of the Year and to the NJCBA’s All-First Team, he batted .333 with seven walks in the BIG EAST Tournament, en route to being named to the All-Tournament Team. In 2012, Granite was named to the All-BIG EAST Third Team, despite missing 17 games due to injury. He batted .302 and stole 21 bases in 22 attempts, sixth-most in the BIG EAST. As a junior, Granite was named First Team All-BIG EAST and All-NJCBA while starting all 56 games for Seton Hall in centerfield. Twice named to the BIG EAST’s Weekly Honor Roll, he led Seton Hall with career-highs of 35 stolen bases and 59 runs scored, both registering second-most in the conference. On April 15, Granite was named BIG EAST Player of the Week for batting .444 with five RBIs and six stolen bases in four games vs. Wagner and #24 Houston. The speedy leadoff hitter batted a career-high .304 and was named MVP of the Strike Out Cancer Tournament. On March 17, Granite reached base five times vs. UMass, going 4-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, two runs scored and a career-high five stolen bases.
