CLEARWATER, FLA. – Senior Greg Terhune (Washington, N.J.) threw his second career complete game as the Seton Hall baseball team remained alive in the 2013 BIG EAST Championship with a 7-2 victory over St. John’s on Thursday.
Terhune gave up two runs in the first inning, but settled down and didn’t give up a hit after the second inning. The 6-foot-5 left-hander gave up just three hits and struck out six to improve to 7-3 on the season. A day after being shut out by Notre Dame, Seton Hall’s offense broke out on Thursday. Every Pirate in the starting lineup recorded at least one hit as the team erupted for 15 hits total and seven runs. Leading the hit parade was senior Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.) and freshman Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.), who had three hits apiece. Chiaradio was a late injury replacement at second base, subbing for regular starter Mike Genovese. Terhune ran into trouble immediately in the bottom of the first inning. After retiring the first batter, he allowed the next four batters to reach, two via walk. The big blow was a one-out RBI double down the left field line by Frank Schwindel, which plated the game’s first run. Danny Bethea followed with a bases loaded sacrifice fly to extend the Red Storm lead to 2-0. The St. John’s lead however, didn’t last long as Seton Hall struck back for a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) led off with a walk and moved to second on a single by Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.). With one out, Dillon Hamlin (Colts Neck, N.J.) laced a single to centerfield, scoring Kalamar with the Pirates’ first run of the tournament. Freshman Chiaradio followed with an RBI single of his own, which scored Selden with the tying run. The Red Storm appeared poised to retake the lead in the bottom of the second with two on and two out. Zach Lauricella singled to center, but Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) threw out Jamal Clarke at the plate to preserve the tie and end the inning. It was Granite’s second outfield assist in two days. Seton Hall took the lead for good in the top of the third. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) was hit by a pitch and stole second. With two outs, Kalamar singled to right field, scoring Weigel, to give Seton Hall a 3-2 lead. The Pirates got single runs in the fourth, sixth, eighth and ninth innings to provide insurance and extend their lead to 7-2. The loss eliminates St. John’s from the tournament. Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow (Friday) when it faces #3 Pittsburgh. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm. The loser will be eliminated from the 2013 BIG EAST Championship.
