How It Happened
With a postseason spot on the line, the Pirates entered the opening game of this series firing on all cylinders. After Katey Brennan and Caroline Hobbes led off the game with a pair of singles, Kelsey Carr drew a six-pitch walk to load the bases three batters into the game. Hannah Alexander knocked a RBI groundout the very next at-bat to score Brennan and put The Hall up 1-0.

With a pair of runners in scoring position and one out, Olivia Gilbert kept the pressure on by lacing a single through the Blue Jays' defense to score Hobbes and put Seton Hall up 2-0. The Pirates would strand two after a pair of strikeouts, but they would head to the bottom of the frame with the two-run lead.
The Hall would not hold the lead for long, however, as a two-run home run by Creighton tied the game at 2-2 at the end of the first inning. After ending the second inning with the bases loaded, the Blue Jays punished the Pirates by collecting another home run to put The Hall down one, 3-2.

The game continued to swing rapidly in both directions, however. After a Taylor Hill double, an energetic Andrea Perez demolished a home run to left field to pull Seton Hall back in front 4-3. Despite facing a few difficult situations, Carr battled through the next two innings to keep The Hall ahead before giving way to Kyra Kreuscher.

Despite the first two runners she faced reaching base, Kreuscher quickly collected two strikeouts to put two outs on the board. Unfortunately, a Blue Jay double tied the game, 4-4, at the end of the fifth inning.
The Pirates, facing mounting pressure, responded with a pair of runs in the sixth inning thanks to strong small ball play. Perez came around to score on a Hobbes bunt after her leadoff double to make it a 5-4 game . With two runners on, still in the sixth, Alexander drove an RBI single down the line to score both runners and put Seton Hall up 7-4.
With a three-run lead, the Pirates sat on the precipice of a much-needed victory. However, a four run Creighton sixth inning, capped off by a three-run home run, sent the Pirates down one, 8-7, with only three outs left to play with.
Facing a one-run deficit in the seventh inning, Naya Martinez collected a single to open the inning. Now with the tying run on-base, the Pirates were on verge of forcing extra innings. The Hall would never plate Martinez, however, and fell 8-7 to the Blue Jays in game one of the series.
