Cestero allowed just two runs and one hit. He hadn't given up a hit until an RBI single with two outs in the seventh inning. Magnus Kreiger went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Marco Ali went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
How It Happened
After Cestero retired the side in order in the top of the first inning, Aiden Robbins worked a lead-off walk for the Pirates before stealing second base, his 16th of the season. With one out, Robbins broke for third base and had it stolen when he saw the ball go to the backstop. Robbins smartly broke for home as he scored The Hall's first run on a passed ball.
Cestero sat down six Monmouth batters in a row to start the game. The first batter of the second for the Pirates was Ferri who drove a 2-0 pitch over the wall in right center field that extended Seton Hall's lead to 2-0. Cestero worked around a baserunner in the third inning but couldn't escape trouble in the fourth where the Hawks got a run back on an RBI fielder's choice that made it 2-1 Seton Hall.
The Pirates answered with a three-run home half of the fourth starting with another solo home run by Ferri that also, once again, led off an inning. Krieger then drew a walk and stole second with one out that drew an errant throw and allowed him to move to third base. Ali was the next batter and he put down a bunt single that scored Kreiger. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, AJ Soldra drew a bases loaded walk that extended the Pirates' lead to 5-1.
Monmouth got the leadoff runner aboard in the top of the fifth but he was quickly erased with a double play before a groundout to Ali at third base ended the frame. Cestero worked a one-two-three sixth inning and got two outs in the seventh before Monmouth made it a three-run game, 5-2, with an RBI single. However, Seton Hall put the game out of reach in the bottom of the seventh thanks to timely two-out hitting as Krieger, Dylan Pacheco and Ali each collected one-run singles that made it 8-2 Pirates.
Patrick Benn came out of the bullpen to record the final out of the seventh inning prior to working a flawless eighth inning. Despite Monmouth scoring a run in the ninth that put the score at 8-3, Benn was able to retire the side to nail down the victory.
