Justin Ford went 2-for-3 with a run scored and reached base in four of his five plate appearances. Gabe Cavazzoni registered his first career multi-hit game going 2-for-3 with an RBI double. Seton Hall's defense did not help its cause as multiple errors led to unearned runs. Out of the bullpen, Stephen Curry struckout two in 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
How It Happened
The Broncs came out swinging in the bottom of the first inning scoring two runs to take an early lead. In the top of the second, Nick Ferri led off the inning with a double and Magnus Krieger followed with a base hit to right field that allowed Ferri to score. With the Pirates now trailing 2-1 with one out, an errant throw on a pickoff attempt allowed Krieger to advance to third base. Ryan Frontera brought him home on a sacrifice fly that evened up the score at 2-2.
Rider answered with another two-run inning that put them back in front, 4-2, before the Broncs added runs in the third and fourth innings to take a commanding 6-2 lead. Looking to dig the Pirates out of a hole, Ford worked a solid at-bat to lead off with a walk in the top of the fifth. The next batter was AJ Soldra who sent a 1-0 pitch the opposite way for a triple that plated Ford easily from first base. An RBI groundout for Ferri scored Soldra and made it a two-run ballgame, 6-4, but Rider continued to be relentless as it drove in four runs in the home half of the fifth to take a commanding 10-4 lead.
The Broncs led 11-4 entering the the top of the eighth where Cavazzoni doubled home Marco Ali before scoring on a wild pitch that put the score at 11-6. After Curry tossed a scoreless eighth inning, the Pirates loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth. A wild pitch plated Jake Walman that made it 11-7 and a sac fly from Ali scored Ferri that trimmed Rider's lead to three, 11-8, but that would be as close as the Pirates could get.
