Zahara Bishop collects career-highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Freshman Zahara Bishop (Minneapolis, Minn.) had career-highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds as the Seton Hall women's basketball team defeated Washington State, 74-65, on Tuesday to close the non-conference portion of its schedule.
Seton Hall never trailed and led by as many as 25 points with 7:51 left in the third quarter, but the Cougars cut their deficit to as few as three points in the fourth quarter before the Pirates were able to ice the game late. The Pirates won the game with a devastating first quarter, outscoring Washington State, 30-to-10.
Bishop's double-double is the first of her career, while five other Pirates scored at least seven points. Junior Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas) had 15 points, while Jada Eads (Orlando, Fla.) added 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Mariana Valenzuela (Mazatlan, Mexico) had eight points and five rebounds, Jordana Codio (Winter Garden, Fla.) tallied seven points and six rebounds, while Ja'Kahla Craft (Elk River, Minn.) collected seven points and two boards.
THE STORY:
Seton Hall put the pedal to the metal from the beginning, starting the game on a 14-0 run. The Pirates stifling defense kept Washington State off the scoreboard until the 5:42 mark of the first quarter. The Hall shot 68.4 percent from the floor in the first 10 minutes and took a commanding 30-to-10 lead into the second.
Washington State opened the second quarter with a 10-2 run to cut its deficit to 32-20 with 5:06 and forced a Seton Hall timeout. The Cougars cut the Pirates' lead to 11 points, but The Hall closed out the half with buckets by Natalia Hall-Rosa (Randolph, Mass.) and Codio to take a 44-29 advantage into the break.
The Pirates got off to a similarly hot start to begin the second half, scoring the first 10 points, and a layup by Bishop with 7:51 extended their lead to 54-29. Leading 56-31, The Hall went into a shooting slump, connecting on just one of its next 11 shots and allowing the Cougars to go on a 13-3 burst to cut their deficit to 59-44 with 1:37 left in the third quarter.
The Cougars scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter and cut their deficit to just eight points, 61-53, with 6:44 left to play. A layup by WSU's Eleonora Villa with 1:17 left in the contest made it a one possession game, 68-65, but Catalon hit a pair of free-throws on The Hall's next trip down the floor and Seton Hall's lead only grew from there. The Pirates were able to ice the game on the line.
THE NUMBERS:
Seton Hall will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 19 when it returns to BIG EAST Conference play at Villanova. Tip-time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
