Four-Run First Helps Secure Pirates' Sweep of St. John's

How it Happened
The Pirates pushed all four runs across in the first inning to put the pressure on the Red Storm early. With a runner on first, Lela Allen (Phoenix, Ariz.) popped a ball down the left field line that got past the left fielder and rolled into the corner. Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) came all the way around to score on what would be an RBI triple for Allen.
Allen would be brought home just a few pitches later, as Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) doubled into the gap in right center to make it a 2-0 game. It was the second straight game in which Smith hit a first inning RBI double.
Later in the inning, Erin Howard (Skillman, N.J.) stepped up with the bases loaded and two out. The freshman laced a 2-2 pitch through the hole on the left side of the infield, bringing home a pair of runs to extend the lead to 4-0.
St. John's reliever Loreley Francia came on at the end of the first to thwart the Pirate rally, and she would hold the Pirate bats silent for the remainder of the day. This allowed the Red Storm bats to get to work, and they would get on the scoreboard in the third on an RBI double from London Jarrard. The next inning, Sydney Totarsky would make it a 4-2 game on a two-out single to center.
In the fifth, the Pirates turned to Carr to get the final nine outs and preserve the sweep. The junior did exactly that, allowing just one baserunner and now surrendering any hits over the final three innings as she earned her first career save.
Notes & Numbers
- Howard has knocked in a run in each of the last three games in which she has started. In her 10 games started this season, she has RBI's in five of them.
- Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) saw her career-best 14-game hitting streak come to an end. She did, however, work a walk to extend her on-base streak to 15 straight games.
- Hill's on-base streak stretched to 16 consecutive games.
- Carr has now allowed a run in her last 11 innings of work.
- Since the BIG EAST went to the modern schedule model of three-game conference series' back in 2010, this is the first time that the Pirates have swept two BIG EAST foes in a three-game series in the same season.
- Halfway through conference play, the Pirates sit in a tie for second place in the BIG EAST standings.
The Pirates remain home on Wednesday as they welcome Rider to South Orange for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
