Pirates Blank Xavier For BIG EAST Victory
10/9/2016 4:10:00 PM | Women's Soccer
South Orange, N.J. – A goal from freshman Marissa Aniolowski (Enfield, Conn.) in the 76th minute propelled the Seton Hall women's soccer team (5-7-1, 1-4-0 BIG EAST) to a 1-0 BIG EAST victory over Xavier (6-8-1, 0-5-0) on Sunday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field. The win marked The Hall's first in conference action this season and was its third shutout of the year.
Anna MacLean (Thunder Bay, Ontario) totaled three saves to record her third clean sheet in 2016, combining with center backs Cathy Chukuka (Marlboro, N.J.) and Sarah Schweinberg (Wantage, N.J.) to keep Xavier off the board despite the Musketeers holding the edge in shots. The two sides went to the break with no score after a defensive first half, before the Pirates finally broke through late in the second.
Turning Point
With under 15 minutes to play in regulation, Sarah Cortes (Paramus, N.J.) chipped a pass from near midfield up ahead to Aniolowski. The ball was briefly recovered by the Xavier backline, but Aniolowski pressured and forced a turnover near the edge of the box before streaking in alone on goal. Her hard shot curled from the left side towards the right corner, deflecting off an XU defender before finding the back of the net.
Goal Descriptions
76th – SHU – Aniolowski forced a turnover deep and her shot from the left deflected into right corner for the goal.
Inside the Numbers
- The Hall's victory came despite Xavier holding a 13-8 edge in shots and an 11-3 advantage in the second half.
- The Pirates held a 5-3, while XU out-generated SHU 3-1 in corner kicks.
- Aniolowski led all players with five shots, including three on goal.
- Xavier's Rachel Piccus made four saves compared to three for MacLean.
- After spending the majority of the first 12 matches at fullback, Aniolowski was moved up to an attacking wing position and answered with a career performance.
- The Pirates improve to 1-2-1 against Xavier since the Musketeers joined the league prior to the 2013 season and have shut out XU in both meetings in South Orange.
- MacLean's shutout was her third of the year and the fourth of her career.
- Aniolowski became the fourth different Pirate to score a game-winning goal this season.
