GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Seton Hall University softball team lost a pair of games at the East Carolina Pirate Invitational on Saturday, falling to Virginia Tech, 18-0, and host East Carolina, 4-0, in Greenville, N.C.
Virginia Tech 18, Seton hall 0
Virginia Tech's impressive freshman pitcher Mikaela Aiken tossed a no-hitter in five innings of work as the Hokies picked up a win over Seton Hall in the tournament opener.
Virginia Tech scored two in the top of the first as Kylie McGoldrick smacked an RBI double to right-center field off SHU starter Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.). DeStaso was able to work out of the first giving up just two runs, but when McGoldrick hit a three-run homer with one out in the top of the second, senior Casey Moses (Lower Burrell, Pa.) came in for relief.
The Hokies scored six in the second and added six more in the top of the fourth, posting a pair of big innings. On the mound, Aiken walked just three on the day, retiring 15 of the 18 Pirates that stepped to the plate.
East Carolina 4, Seton Hall 0
Seton Hall fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first when Nicole Cheek recorded an RBI-single two at-bats into the inning off Pirate starter Lauren Fischer (Robbinsville, N.J.). East Carolina scored twice more in the third, this time with Casey Alcorn drawing up the big hit, an RBI-double to left center, but trailing by four heading into the fifth, Seton Hall tried to string a rally together.
Sarah Christian gave up six hits in the game, but three of them came in the top of the fifth. Seton Hall recorded three-straight singles to load the bases with one out, as Yasmin Harrell (Cheektowaga, N.Y.), Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) and Whitney Jones (Skowhegan, Maine) all registered a base knock.
However, Christian worked her way out of the jam, getting Noel Lent (Yaphanic, N.Y.) and DeStaso to ground to second and end the inning.
Fischer gave up four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts, falling to 2-3 on the year. Harrell went 2-for-3 for The Hall.
Seton Hall returns to action tomorrow morning, when it will face these same two teams at the Pirate Invitational. First pitch against Virginia Tech is scheduled for 10 a.m., with East Carolina to follow at 12:30 p.m.
