Senior Brittany Hammer (Manheim, Pa.) had an RBI single in the fifth inning against UT-Arlington, but the Pirates were unable to overcome an early 5-0 deficit.
In the second game of the day San Diego State got off to a fast start, scoring four runs through the first two innings, and finished with a four-run seventh.
Six different players recorded a base hit for Seton Hall against the Aztecs, including sophomore Colltey Sheldon (Peoria, Ariz.), who has a least one hit in every game at the tournament.
-- Game One --
Texas-Arlington was ahead 5-0 through three innings of play, scoring three in the second and two more in the third. The Mustangs registered three base hits during the second inning with Kallan Thompson and Taylor Zink recording RBI base hits and Meagan Michele drawing a bases loaded walk.
The Mustangs saw their first three batters of the third reach base and they took a 4-0 lead via a Jolene Schaefer sacrifice fly to center field.
Seton Hall's run came in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Sara Haefeli (Montclair, N.J.) singled to centerfield and moved into scoring position on a Yasmin Harrell (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) grounder to short. The next batter was Hammer who brought Haefeli all the way home with a base hit up the middle.
The UT-Arlington throw to the plate was not in time to catch Haefeli, allowing Hammer to move to second and Harrell to sit at third, but the Mustangs got sophomore Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.) to ground out to end the inning.
DeStaso, who entered at pitcher in the third inning, was effectively able to keep the Mustangs from extending the lead. She threw the final 3.1 innings, allowing no runs and just two hits with five strikeouts, but the Pirates were unable to manufacture any more offense.
Hammer finished the game batting 2-for-4 with the RBI, while Haefeli was 2-for-3 and Sheldon continued her hot weekend, going 2-for-3.
-- Game Two --
Behind a two-run home run from Patrice Jackson in the first inning the Aztecs staked claim to a 4-0 lead through the first inning and a half against Seton Hall.
Jackson homered again in the fifth, this time a solo shot to left center field, to extend the San Diego State lead to 5-0, and the Aztecs scored four unearned runs in the seventh.
Seton Hall registered a pair of base hits, one from junior Maria DeLuca (Cedar Grove, N.J.) and another from Haefeli during its turn in the fourth inning, but San Diego State escaped the jam forcing the Pirates to strand two runners.
DeStaso threw all but one inning, allowing nine runs, just five earned, with three strikeouts. Junior Jen Metzger (Pine Hill, N.J.) threw one inning, yielding one hit.
Seton Hall wraps up its west coast trip on Sunday, March 17, when it faces Colorado State at 12 p.m. (ET).
