SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Seton Hall softball team lost the final game of a three-game series to Syracuse, 12-1, in five innings on Saturday. The Pirates fall to 18-21 overall and 0-8 in BIG EAST play.
SHU scored the first run of the game in the opening inning after a leadoff single by Brittany Hammer (Manheim, Pa.). An infield single by Kristen Kaelin (Parlin, N.J.) set up Nicole Loewenstein (Joppa, Md.). The cleanup hitter singled, and a misplay by the leftfielder allowed Hammer to score.
The Orange took the lead in the third after a leadoff walk and an error on a potential double play ball prolonged the inning. Jasmine Watson made the Pirates pay with a base-hit to plate both runners to make it 2-1
Carey-Leigh Thomas set the tone in the fourth, leading the frame off with a solo shot in the exact same spot she hit her walk-off homer in game two yesterday. Syracuse went on to score 11 runs on seven hits in the inning and finished the deal by holding the Pirates off the board in the top of the fifth.
Freshman Danielle DeStaso (Congers, N.Y.) drops to 4-8 on the year after hurling the first three innings.
The Pirates have a week off before continuing their 10-game road swing at Providence next weekend.
