SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Seton Hall softball team returns to the BIG EAST Championship this year as the No. 8 seed after missing out on the postseason last year. The Pirates (15-34, 9-13) will meet No. 1 seed and 11th nationally ranked DePaul on Thursday, May 10, at 4:00 p.m.
The Blue Demons finished the regular season with a 40-10 overall mark and a perfect 20-0 record in the BIG EAST.
The single-elimination tournament continues with the semi-finals to be played on Friday, and the Championship Game will take place on Saturday. Fans can access the four quarterfinal games and two semifinal games for free; championship game broadcast on CSTV to be available for fans online for $9.95
The Pirates are making their fifth BIG EAST Championship appearance in the last seven years and eighth overall. In 2005, Seton Hall went 3-0 en route to its second straight BIG EAST Championship, doing so in dramatic fashion.
Wtih the game scoreless until the top of the 11th, the Pirates scored two runs leaving Notre Dame down to its last three outs. The Irish scored a run to cut the deficit to 2-1, but Megan Meyer sealed the victory with a strikeout. Junior Jenna Best (Medford, N.J.) is the only current member of the squad that played in that game, in which she was 3-for-5 from the plate.
Seton Hall is 11-9 in conference tourney play.
Seton Hall is 3-11 against this year’s field. The Pirates were swept by DePaul on Mar. 24, dropping game one, 3-0, and game two, 8-0. SHU also lost twice to Notre Dame on Mar. 25, Louisville on May 5, and USF on May 6. The Pirates split the regular season series with UConn on Apr. 1, Pittsburgh on Apr. 21, and Syracuse on Apr. 22.
Seton Hall hit just .199 against the seven teams, with junior Ashley Constantini (Newark, Del.) (.385) the only hitter over .300. Freshman Laura Baranek (Orefield, Pa.) has also had some success, belting two homers and knocking in five runs. Sophomore Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.) was 3-8 with a 3.96 ERA in 12 contests.
