QUEENS, N.Y. - The Seton Hall softball team earned a split of its two-game series at St. John's on Saturday afternoon. The Pirates (8-25; 4-6 BE) won game one, 4-2, but dropped the night-cap, 5-4. Sophomore Kealan Waldron (Oak Park, Ill.) registered hits in both contests to extend her hitting streak to 12 games.
In game one, sophomore Leah Menichetti (Jessup, Pa.) led of the third inning with triple, and scored on a Shannon Pease (Binghamton, N.Y.) base-hit to make it, 1-0.
Sophomore Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y) made quick work of the Red Storm in the first five innings, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth. After a leadoff single, Schweitzer surrendered a two-run home run to Danielle Estrada, which gave St. John's a 2-1 lead.
The Pirates loaded the bases for Waldron in the top of the seventh, and she delivered with a RBI single to knot the game at two. After a strikeout, junior Jenna Best (Medford, N.J.) drove in two more runs with a single of her own to put Seton Hall ahead for good.
Schweitzer earned the win, throwing another complete game, allowing two earned runs and fanning three. Best was 2-for-3 with a triple to go with the two RBI base knock.
Estrada put St. John's ahead in game two with a solo shot in the bottom of the second, but the Hall responded with a rally in the top of the third. Freshman Allison Gengler (West Chester, Pa.) and Menichetti reached base, setting the table for Waldron again. Waldron delivered a single to score both runners, and put the Pirates on top, 2-1.
The Red Storm struck again in the bottom half of the inning scoring three runs, capitalizing off of two Seton Hall errors, to leap over the Pirates, 4-2.
St. John's added another run in the bottom of the fourth to make it, 5-2, but Seton Hall had one more comeback left in them. Two straight doubles in the top of the sixth, Best drove in Pease with a single, and Ashley Constantini (Newark, Del.) added another hit to score Waldron and put runners on first and second. After a pitching change by the Storm, two consecutive pop ups ended the threat as St. John's took the win in game two.
Schweitzer started the second contest and picked up the loss to make her record 6-13 on the season. She surrendered only two earned runs in four innings of work. Waldron was 2-for-4 with a double, and Constantini posted her first two-hit game of the season.
The Pirates return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 11, against Long Island University at Ivy Hill Park. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
