SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall softball team bounced back from a disappointing game one loss to earn a split of their double-header with Pittsburgh. The Pirates (12-28; 8-8 BE) dropped the opening game, 16-0, but fought back in the second to win 4-2.
The Panthers put up 12 runs in the top of the second inning en route to their dominating victory, but Seton Hall struck first in game two. Sophomore Leah Menichetti (Jessup, Pa.) led off the first with a bunt single. Menichetti caught Pitt's defense sleeping and stole second before the next pitch was thrown, and scored on a Jenna Best (Medford, N.J.) single to put the Pirates on top, 1-0.
Samantha Card hit a solo home run in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. The Pirates were threatening again in the bottom half of the inning with runners on second and third. Sophomore Amanda Winn (Manahawkin, N.J) hit a ball the Panther third baseman could not handle and Ashley Constantini (Newark, Del.) scored to make it 2-1.
After an RBI single from Pittsburgh's Heather Connor, the score was knotted once again. Sophomore Daria Glynos (Kenilworth, N.J.), who notched the only base-hit for the Pirates in game one, started the bottom of the fifth with a double to the gap in right center. Walks by Menichetti and Best loaded the bases with two out for Shannon Pease (Binghamton, N.Y.). Pease hit a routine fly ball to left field, but the ball was dropped bring in the two go-ahead runs.
Sophomore Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.) did the rest, allowing just one batter to reach base in the final two innings to earn the win. She threw a complete game, surrendered just six hits while striking out five and walking none. Schweitzer also picked up the decision in the first game and is 10-17 on the season.
Senior Danielle Steinseifzer (Plano, Texas) went 2-for-3 from the plate in game two.
The Pirates return to action on Sunday, Apr. 22, with a double-header against Syracuse at Ivy Hill Park. The first game is slated to begin at noon.
