SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall softball team was dealt a 4-0 loss in non-conference action by Long Island on Wednesday at Ivy Hill Park. The Pirates (8-26) are back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader at Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y.
Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.) threw a complete game for SHU, allowing just one earned run on eight hits over seven innings while striking out three. Jenny Giles picked up the shutout victory for LIU (18-16) as she scattered five hits to go along with seven strikeouts.
Shannon Pease (Binghamton, N.Y.) and Laura Baranek (Orefield, Pa.) each went 2-for-3 for the Pirates. Danielle Steinseifzer (Plano, Texas) also added a hit.
LIU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Raylene Asman hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and one out. Schweitzer struck out Jessie DePippo to end the inning.
The Blackbirds tacked on three runs in the seventh on Celina Castillo’s two-run double and an RBI fielder’s choice from DePippo.
The Pirates put runners on base in four of their seven at-bats and left two on three times. SHU stranded seven runners while LIU left nine on base.
Kealan Waldron (Oak Park, Ill.) had her 12-game hitting streak snapped in the loss.
