SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall softball team took one of two games against Connecticut on Sunday. The Pirates (7-22; 3-5 BE) won, 4-2, in game one, but fell, 5-4, in a back and forth game in the second contest. Sophomore Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.) was the story, pitching two complete games for Seton Hall.
In game one, the Pirates struck first with a two out rally. Sophomore Kealan Waldron (Oak Park, Ill.) was hit by a pitch, then sophomore Shannon Pease (Binghamton, N.Y) drove Waldron in with her first career triple. Junior Jenna Best (Medford, N.J.) hit a two-run homer to put the Hall ahead, 3-0, after one inning.
Schweitzer retired the first 10 Huskie batters in order before allowing a single to Holly Calcagno. The Huskies (14-11; 3-3 BE) were able to advance runners with three straight fielder's choices to get on the scoreboard. With two on and two outs, Schweitzer struck out UConn's Danielle Del Ponte to end the threat.
Seton Hall added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth off a solo shot from senior Danielle Steinseifzer (Plano, Texas), and the Pirates went on to win game one, 4-2.
Schweitzer earned the win, allowing just three hits, one earned run, striking out four and walking none. Best finished up the game with a 2-for-3 performance from the plate.
The Huskies got off to the fast start in the second contest on a solo home run by Calcagno in the top of the first. The Hall quickly knotted the game at one after a Waldron single scored sophomore Leah Menichetti (Jessup, Pa.).
Junior Christa Leighton (Brewster, N.Y) started another rally in the second with a single to left. After an infield hit by freshman Madon Maile (Jenkintown, Pa.), freshman Allison Gengler (West Chester, Pa.) doubled to right field to score both runs and give the Pirates a 3-1 advantage.
UConn scored a run in the third, to make it 3-2. The Huskies put runners on first and second in the the fourth, when pinch hitter Lauren Cecchi drilled a double to tie game at three. Gengler gave the lead back to Seton Hall in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single.
Schweitzer retired the Huskies in the fifth inning without any major problems, but found herself in another jam in the sixth inning. UConn started the inning with a double, then two straight Pirate errors loaded the bases. Calcagno hit a sacrifice fly to bring home the tying run.
In the seventh, the Huskies earned another leadoff hit with a single off Schweitzer. Pinch runner Tricia Sullivan stole second and went to third on a throwing error by Leighton. UConn's Katie Dombrowski drove in the eventual game-winning run with another sacrifice fly.
Schweitzer went the distance in game two but dropped to 5-12 after giving up just three earned runs and fanning four batters. Gengler was 2-for-4 from the plate with three RBI. Waldron's base-hit extended her hitting streak to eight games.
The Pirates return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 3, against Fordham at Ivy Hill Park. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
