Softball Shuts Out Providence In Doubleheader Sweep

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. The Seton Hall softball team picked up its first two BIG EAST wins of the season on Saturday with a pair of shutout wins over Providence, 7-0 and 1-0.  The Pirates (6-21, 2-4) will host Connecticut tomorrow in a doubleheader scheduled for noon.

SHU blew game one wide open with a five-run first inning.  Allison Gengler (West Chester, Pa.) led off the game with a single before the next two batters were retired.  Shannon Pease (Binghamton, N.Y.), Jenna Best (Medford, N.J.), and Amanda Winn (Manahawkin, N.J.) drew three straight walks to force in the game’s first run, followed by a two-run single from Daria Glynos (Kenilworth, N.J.) to make it 3-0.  Following a pitching change, Danielle Steinseifzer (Plano, Texas) hit a line drive to center that was misplayed, allowing two more runs to come across.

In the third inning, Best led off with a walk, and the Pirates would later load the bases with one out after Glynos singled and Steinseifzer reached on a bunt.  Gengler ripped a single to left, scoring two runs to give the Pirates a 7-0 lead that they would hold for the remainder of the game.

Ashley Constantini (Newark, Del.) picked up her second win of the year, throwing 2.2 innings of one-hit ball in relief of starter Maura Lund (Oak Park, Ill.), who threw two-plus scoreless innings.  Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.) allowed just one hit over the final 2.1 innings to seal the win.  Kealan Waldron (Oak Park, Ill.) was 3-for-4 with two doubles.

Game two proved to be a classic pitching duel between Schweitzer and Providence’s Danielle Bertolette.  The game was scoreless until the Hall rallied for the game’s only run in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Winn led off with a double down the right field line before being pinch run for by Christina Sammarco (Pompton Lakes, N.J.).  Jennifer Maccio replaced Bertolette for the Friars and induced a pop out from Glynos for the first out.  But Steinseifzer proved up to the task, lacing a single to center field to score Sammarco and give the Pirates the sweep.

Schweitzer picked up the complete game shutout victory to move to 4-11 on the year.  She allowed seven hits while striking out five and walking none.  Waldron, Pease, Best, and Madon Maile (Jenkintown, Pa.) also added hits for SHU.
