Softball Swept At Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. The Seton Hall softball dropped a pair of games at Monmouth on Wednesday, losing 4-0 and 10-2.  The Pirates (4-21) return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against BIG EAST rival Providence at Ivy Hill Park.

In game one, Monmouth put together a three-run second inning, using an RBI single from Candice Palumbo and a two-run double from Gina Mignogna to take a lead they would not relinquish.  Dawn Gilchrist homered in the fourth for the game’s final run.

Danielle Steinseifzer (Plano, Texas) continued her hot hitting with a 2-for-3 performance, while Kealan Waldron (Oak Park, Ill.) picked up the only other Pirate hit.  Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits over five innings. 

SHU jumped to an early lead in game two, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.  After Shannon Pease (Binghamton, N.Y.) walked and stole second base, Jenna Best (Medford, N.J.) came up with an RBI single to put the Pirates in front.

Monmouth hung four runs on the board in the bottom of the third, all of SHU starter Maura Lund (Oak Park, Ill.),  The Pirates came back with a score of their own in the fourth when Waldron doubled and came around to score when Amanda Winn’s (Manahawkin, N.J.) single was misplayed in the outfield.  The Hall could get no closer, and Monmouth tacked on three runs in the fifth and sixth to bring the game to an early halt.

Best was 2-for-3 for the Pirates, while Allison Gengler (West Chester, Pa.) added a hit.
