SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Seton Hall softball team dropped two games to Notre Dame on Sunday. The Pirates (3-18; 0-4 BE) lost, 2-1, in the first contest, despite a strong pitching effort from sophomore Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.). The Irish (14-12; 4-2 BE) went on to take the second match-up, 9-1.
Notre Dame's Katie Laing led off the second inning with a double, and scored after a throwing error while attempting to steal third base. In the top of the fourth, freshman Allison Gengler (West Chester, Pa.) walked and advanced to third on a Kealan Waldron (Oak Park, Ill.) single. Gengler was then brought across the plate after an error to tie the game at one.
The Irish came right back in the bottom half of the inning when a single knocked in Laing for the eventual game-winning run.
Schweitzer pitched six innings, allowed six hits, while giving up just one earned run. Waldron's single was the only hit of the game for the Pirates.
The Pirates fell behind, 1-0, once again in game two, but came-back to tie the game in the top of the second. Sophomore Shannon Pease (Binghamton, N.Y.) recorded a base hit and scored after an RBI single by senior Danielle Steinseifzer (Plano, Texas).
Notre Dame scored three runs in the third inning, and added four more in the fourth to finish the sweep.
Pease was 2-for-2 from the plate, and freshman Laura Baranek (Orefield, Pa.) was 1-for-2.
The Pirates return to Ivy Hill Park to play a double-header against Sacred Heart on Tuesday, Mar. 27. Game one is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
