Shaughnessy Scores Twice in Pirates' Win Over Iona, 3-0

South Orange, N.J. – Paige Shaughnessy found the back of the net for the first two times in her collegiate career as the Seton Hall women's soccer team improved to 2-0 with a victory over Iona, 3-1, on Thursday night. The win gives Seton Hall its first 2-0 start since 2021.
How it Happened
The match opened quietly, with neither side able to generate a scoring opportunity through the first third of the match. As the teams jockeyed for momentum, the Pirate attack started to build some consistency as halftime drew closer. The pressure from the home side forced a mistake by the Iona backline, as a header from Adria Kitzinger fell to the foot of an Iona defender and deflected past the goalkeeper for the first goal of the night.
Shortly before halftime, the Pirates doubled their lead on a perfectly executed attack. Reece Paget found the ball in space in the attacking third, switching play out wide to Kitzinger who sent in a cross to the middle of the box. Shaughnessy got on the other end of the Kitzinger cross to notch her first career goal.
The Pirates would play the possession game to start the second half while ramping up the defensive pressure to thwart any Iona scoring opportunity. As the half wore on, the Pirates would pick up an opportunistic insurance goal to salt the win away. Shaughnessy applied pressure to the Iona backline, forcing a bad pass at the edge of the penalty area and intercepted it to score her second goal of the night.
