Angelillo's Two Goals Push Pirates Past Monmouth in Season Opener

South Orange, N.J. – A pair of goals from Pirate newcomer Gianna Angelillo followed by a late insurance tally from sophomore Nina Davis helped propel a second-half charge in Seton Hall's 3-1 win over Monmouth in Thursday's season opener.

How it Happened
Monmouth threatened early in the match, but the Seton Hall defense was up to the task out of the gates. In the 11^th minute, a blistering shot from just outside the penalty area looked destined to go bar down and give the Hawks the early edge. Instead, Avery Strohecker reached up to knock the ball over the crossbar and keep things scoreless. Just a minute later, another Monmouth chance ensued when Strohecker was off her line, but Jordana Bello was able to head away the shot on goal. The Hawks would later notch the first goal of the match in the 36^th minute, taking a 1-0 advantage which they held at the half.

In the second half, the chances quickly tiled in favor of the Pirates. Just six minutes after the break, Abby Udowenko gained possession on the far side of the pitch and moved into the box. She crossed the ball into the middle of the penalty area, finding a wide open Angelillo who buried the equalizer in her first game as a Pirate.

Six minutes later, that tandem would link up once again. Udowenko worked well in the midfield to force a turnover, then led a perfect pass downfield to Angelillo who deked the goalkeeper to find a wide open net.

In the late stages, the Pirates would tack on an insurance tally. In the 73^rd minute, Davis got on the other end of a long throw-in from Cassidy Brown. After the ball deflected back-and-forth between a couple of Pirates, Bello was able to lead Davis into space to strike a shot with her left foot into the back of the net.
