Seton Hall improves to 7-2 at the halfway point of the BIG EAST season.
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's basketball team used a 23-0 first-half run to pull away from Butler in a 71-48 victory in historic Walsh Gymnasium on Wednesday.
Both teams had trouble scoring in the first half, but the Pirates' stellar defense rose to the occasion keeping Butler scoreless in the second quarter until there were only 52 seconds left before halftime.
Sophomore Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas) had a game-high 15 points to go with three rebounds and six steals in only her second game back from injury.
Freshman Jada Eads (Orlando, Fla.) didn't have a great shooting game, but filled the box score. She finished with 14 points, six assists, tied her career-high with seven rebounds, and set a career-high with five steals. Faith Masonius (Spring Lake, N.J.) added 12 points and four rebounds before fouling out.
THE STORY:
The Pirates scored the first six points of the game, but then was held scoreless for 5:42. Butler, however, was only able to tie the score during The Hall's drought. Seton Hall broke out of its scoring funk in the final minute of the quarter, scoring a quick six points to take a 12-6 lead after 10 minutes.
Seton Hall extended its run to 23-0 in the second quarter, and a layup by Joniyah Bland-Fitzpatrick (New London, Conn.) gave it a commanding 29-6 lead with 1:20 left before halftime. The Pirates held Butler scoreless for the first 9:08 of the second quarter, forcing 13 turnovers and holding the Bulldogs to 0-for-10 during the run. Despite going 0-for-9 from three-point range in the first half, the Pirates took a 30-11 lead into the break.
The Hall scored the first five points of the third quarter, buoyed by a three-pointer by Catalon, to give it a 35-11 advantage just 1:24 after halftime. Up 39-17, Masonius outscored Butler, 6-2, over the next two minutes to extend the Pirates' lead to 45-19 with 3:20 left in the third. The Bulldogs never got closer than a 20-point deficit the rest of the game. After shooting just 30.3 percent from the floor in the first half, the Pirates erupted for 58.1 percent in the second.
