South Orange, N.J. — Despite an 11-6 advantage on shots in the second half including a flurry of chances in the final minutes, the Seton Hall women's soccer team couldn't find the equalizer on Sunday as Yale defeated the Pirates, 1-0, at Owen T. Carroll Field on Sunday.
Natalie Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) had a game-high six shots and three shots on goal for the Pirates (3-5-1). It was an even tilt as Seton Hall finished with a slight 19-18 edge in shots and a 6-5 advantage in corners.Â
The Hall will open BIG EAST play on Sunday, Sept. 22 at Owen T. Carroll Field at 1 p.m.
How It Happened
No shots were taken through the first seven minutes of the game before the Elis took the first two attempts of the match. Skyler Matusz (Kearny, N.J.) had the Pirates' first shot on goal but it was saved. Sophie Liston (Newcastle West, Ireland) came on for Matusz in the 28th minute and she would later put up the Pirates' best shot on goal of the game in the 32nd minute. Liston got her foot on a Yale pass in Seton Hall's attacking half and put her right foot behind a shot that sailed just half a foot wide of the goal.
Yale took a 1-0 lead moments later as the Bulldogs pulled ahead in the 34th minute. The Pirates continued to create chances in the second half with Tavana leading the charge. In the 75th minute, Tavana and Chiara Pucci (Munich, Germany) stepped up to the ball to take a free kick. Tavana played the ball short to herself and took a shot with her left foot that struck the crossbar. Pucci, Tavana and Phoebe Hampson (Cheshire, England) all had shots off goal in a span of 90 seconds but the Pirates weren't able to equalize.
