South Orange, N.J. — Seton Hall women's soccer suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday evening despite the first career goal from freshman Nina Davis (Ramsey, N.J.) as Lehigh topped the Pirates, 2-1.
Davis was assisted on her goal by senior Natalie Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) and senior Caroline Lipton (Alexandria, Va.). The Pirates (1-1-1) will look to bounce back on Sunday when the face Rider at 5 p.m. in Lawrenceville.
How It Happened
It was an even first 30-plus minutes in terms of possession but it was the Pirates who produced more quality chances. Senior Skyler Matusz (Kearny, N.J.) flicked a pass back to senior Sophie Liston (Newcastle West, Ireland) who got a good shot off but couldn't finish. Freshman Tori Angelo (Sellersville, Pa.) also had daylight in the scoring area and fired off a strong attempt that was also stopped by the Lehigh keeper.
Seton Hall finally broke through in the 38th minute when Lipton found Tavana in the box following a throw-in. Tavana sent a crossing pass in front of the net that found Davis in stride as she put Seton Hall 1-0.
Lehigh's attack was improved coming out of halftime and it took advantage of a couple of Seton Hall miscues defensively to score two unanswered goals that put them ahead 2-1. Despite playing a player down for the final 16 minutes, the Pirates still managed to get off four shots including three that were on target but they couldn't find the equalizer.
