Newark, N.J. -Â The Seton Hall women's tennis team celebrated Senior Day, honoring four-year student-athletes Oliwia Kempinski and Emily O'Donovan, but the Pirates could not come up with a victory, falling to Marquette, 6-1, Friday at Naimoli Tennis Center on the campus of NJIT. Imogen Brooker was the lone victor for The Hall on the day.
"This was a tough one to swallow, " said Seton Hall head coach James Enzler. "We just didn't have that spark that we've started to show consistently in both our practices and previous matches. We had some bright moments and some hard fought matches, such as Imi [Brooker] continuing her success at No. 2 singles and Stage [Sereda] nearly pulling out a win at No. 1 singles. But unfortunately some matches we didn't dial in enough or in time to come out successful. Our focus now is not continuing that trend and coming in tomorrow with a bit more intensity."
After Marquette won the doubles point, Brooker won her third singles match in a row and eighth of the spring when she dispatched Emma Davis in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.Â
The Golden Eagles went up 3-1 with wins at No. 3 and No. 4. Aina Plana Ventosa fell to Sarah Badawi at No. 3, snapping an impressive 12-match singles win streak.
Things could have been different for the Pirates at No. 1 and No. 5, where Anastasia Sereda and Niamh Campbell each had first-set wins, but ultimately lost in three sets.
The Pirates will conclude the home schedule with a Saturday match against DePaul, taking place at Seton Hall Prep in West Orange, N.J., at 1:45 p.m.
