Blue Point, N.Y. - The Seton Hall women's tennis team battled back from a 2-0 deficit against Stony Brook to take a 3-2 lead, but the Seawolves ultimately came away with a 4-3 win over the Pirates Saturday afternoon at Eastern Athletic Club. The loss left Seton Hall with a split on the day; the Pirates had defeated Hofstra earlier in the day.
"I thought our team played well overall today in both matches," said Seton Hall head coach James Enzler. "We were right there in the doubles against Stony Brook, and we just need to convert on more of those opportunities moving forward. Doubles was definitely a spot that we had a lot of room to improve on from last year. And it looked much better today. But it was frustrating to see it still get away from us."
Three Pirates won in singles, including Kira Farrakhova in the No. 1 position, Ellie Coe at No. 5 and Rachel Benoualid at No. 6.
After Seton Hall fell behind 2-0, Farrakhova got the Pirates on the board with her 6-3, 6-2 win over Elena Lobo-Corral. Then Coe and Benoualid followed with their straight-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, to give The Hall the 3-2 lead.
Stony Brook tied things up at 3-3, and it all came down to the No. 4 court. Sofia Segui got to a third set, but ultimately Ladina Bruhin secured victory for the Seawolves.
Seton Hall has wrapped up the fall schedule and will return to competition in late January, starting with a Jan. 29 home match against Bucknell at Murray Hill Tennis & Fitness in New Providence, N.J.
