Orlando, Fla. - The Seton Hall women's tennis team went up 3-0 on Saint Joseph's and then held on for a 4-3 victory over the Hawks after clinching a tiebreaking victory in the No. 5 position, Thursday afternoon at USTA National Campus. The Pirates concluded their spring break trip with a 2-1 record.
"There was nothing pretty about this match," Seton Hall head coach James Enzler said. "We barely escaped with the win, and I think our lack of energy contributed to having to grind it out at the end. It was disappointing, but hopefully we learn from today that we have to bring the energy from the start. Kudos to Saint Joseph's; they fought tooth and nail for this one in singles and almost walked away with the win. They should have their heads held high after putting up such a fight."
Seton Hall took care of business in doubles, winning at No. 3 with Niamh Campbell and Imogen Brooker blanking Charlotte Kordonowy and Brooke Tackett, 6-0, and at No. 1 with Aina Plana Ventosa and Anastasia Sereda defeating Fabiana Tort-Umpierre and Victoria Tracey, 6-4.
The Pirates then built a 3-0 lead as Plana Ventosa topped Sophia Amato in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 3 position, and Sereda defeated Tort-Umpierre in the No. 1 position, 6-1, 7-5. For Plana Ventosa, it was her eighth straight singles win, now sitting at 8-0 in spring singles.
Things got dicey though as Saint Joseph's proceeded to win a trio of three-set matches to knot things up. It came down to No. 5 as Arabella Moen overcame a first set loss to win the second set against Tackett and then win the tiebreaker.
The Pirates will rest up and prepare for their next match, which will take place on Friday, March 15 at St. John's, taking place at the USTA Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y., at 11:45 a.m.
