New Providence, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's tennis team took a 6-1 defeat to Georgetown despite great fight from the Pirates, Saturday evening at Murray Hill Tennis & Fitness.
Aina Plana Ventosa continued her very strong spring in her final season on the team as she improved to 9-0 in singles.
"Despite the score, this is one of our best showings yet this spring as far as mental toughness," said Seton Hall head coach James Enzler. "I put a huge emphasis on staying emotionally present and positive in their matches, and they did just that. Doubles was also incredibly strong, and they did exactly what we have been working on in practice, which was fantastic to see."
Had doubles gone the Pirates' way, things could have been different. Plana Ventosa and Anastasia Sereda played a hard-fought match against Chloe Bendetti and Katie Garofolo-Ro, falling 7-5 in the No. 1 position. Had they won that point, Seton Hall could have taken doubles. Niamh Campbell and Imogen Brooker were tied with Emily Novikov and Paige Gilbert, 6-6, in the No. 3 position when the Hoya pairing defaulted.
Although Georgetown had the match in hand already, Plana Ventosa battled back against Katie Garofolo-Ro in the No. 3 position; she lost the first set, won the second set in a tiebreak and then captured the match with a third-set tiebreaker.
Seton Hall is heading to New England next weekend with a match against Bryant on Friday, March 22 and a match against Providence on Saturday, March 23.
