The Hall gets back in the win column and secures a season sweep of local rival St. John's.
QUEENS, N.Y. – Senior Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) erupted for a game-high 31 points and Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) had a double-double as the Seton Hall women's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak with an impressive 68-58 road victory at St. John's on Tuesday.
Â
Seton Hall trailed for only 1:11 of the contest and earned a hard-fought sweep of the Red Storm during the season-series. This was St. John's first loss of the season at Carnesecca Arena (12-1).
Â
Park-Lane poured in 25 of her game-high 31 points as the Pirates set the tone in the first half. Baines tallied her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sidney Cooks (Kenosha, Wis.) also had 14 points to go with six rebounds.Â
Â
Senior Mya Bembry (West Orange, N.J.) pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds and blocked two shots while playing all 40 minutes.
Â
THE STORY:
The Hall charged out of the gate with one of its best stretches in the last two weeks. Park-Lane scored seven of the Pirates first nine points and The Hall claimed a 9-2 lead by the media break of the first quarter. The Hall held St. John's to just 2-for-8 shooting in the first 10 minutes and took a 13-9 lead into the second.
Â
Both offenses woke up in the second quarter and St. John's rallied to take a 26-25 lead with 4:25 left before halftime. The Hall responded with an 8-0 run, and a three-pointer by Cooks gave it a 33-26 advantage with 2:19 to go before the break. St. John's Sitota Gines hit a three-pointer, but the Pirates finished the half with seven straight points to run its half-ending run to 15-3. Park-Lane hit a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer to give her 25 points through 20 minutes and send The Hall into halftime up, 40-29.
Â
The Hall started the third quarter just 2-for-13 from the field, but because the Pirates defense remained stout, they were able to keep their lead. Up 49-43, Cooks hit a three-pointer and then drained a turnaround jumper at the third-quarter buzzer to send The Hall into the fourth up, 54-43.
Â
A layup by Cooks with 8:58 left in the fourth gave The Hall its largest lead of the game, 58-43, but St. John's responded with a 6-0 run to cut its lead to nine. In the final four minutes, the Red Storm twice cut their deficit to just five points, but the Pirates went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final minute to clinch the road victory.
Â
