
O'Brien, Tait Lift Pirates to Second Place at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – Freshman Angus O'Brien (Barwon Heads, Australia) fired a 1-under-par, 70, in Sunday's final round to lift the Seton Hall men's golf team to a second-place finish at the Princeton Invitational.

O'Brien had a bogey on his second hole, but was par or better on every hole for the rest of the round. In all, he had two birdies and 15 pars in route to his 1-under-par, 70. For the tournament, he tied for eighth place among 78 individual golfers with an even-par, 75-68-70-213. Princeton's William Huang won the individual title by six strokes with a remarkable 10-under-par.

It's O'Brien's fourth top-10 finish of the year and his second in the Pirates' last three tournaments.Â

As a team, the Pirates shot a 2-over-par, 284, during Sunday's final round. For the tournament, The Hall was even-par with a 286-280-286-852. They finished seven strokes behind the team champion. One other BIG EAST school was also in the field. Georgetown finished in an eighth-place tie, 22 strokes behind The Hall.

It's the fourth time this season that the Pirates have shot even-par or better for a tournament.

One of the players that tied with O'Brien for eighth place overall is teammate Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England). Tait had three birdies and 13 pars to fuel an even-par, 71, on Sunday. For the tournament, he was even-par with a 69-73-71-213.Â

Tait's two sub-par rounds are No. 23 and No. 24 of his impressive career and move him into fourth place all-time at Seton Hall. Furthermore, this tournament was the eighth top-10 finish of his career and the third this year.

Graduate student Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas) shot a had three birdies and 11 pars in route to a 1-over-par, 72, in round three. He finished the tournament tied for 16th place with a 1-over-par, 73-69-72-214.

Junior Wenliang Xie (Zhaoqing, China) shot a 7-over-par, 78, on Sunday. For the three-round event, he tied for 41st place with an 8-over-par, 73-70-78-221.

Deven Ramachandran (San Rafael, Calif.) had three birdies and 10 pars in round three in route to a 2-over-par, 73. The senior finished with an 11-over-par, 71-80-73-224, for the tournament.

Dating back to 1895, Springdale Golf Club is one of the oldest in New Jersey. Designed by Gerard Lambert and revised by William Flynn in 1926, the walkable course requires precision shot-making and has superior conditions and playability. The property, which was originally private farmland, was purchased by the Class of 1886 and gifted to Princeton University with the expectation of establishing one of the first courses in the region. The private club has a close relationship with the University, and counts many university professors, administrators and students among its members.  With a fine and experienced PGA staff, the club hosts numerous tournaments, collegiate matches, clinics and golf outings every year.Â
