SOUTH PITTSBURG, TENN. – The Seton Hall men's golf team lost its opening round match to Bowling Green on Monday, 5.5-to-0.5, at the Sweetens Cove Intercollegiate.
Â
The upset loss for the second-seeded Pirates drops them into the consolation bracket where they'll meet third-seeded Queens University on Tuesday, which was also an upset victim at the hands of sixth-seeded Belmont, 4-to-2.
Â
Joining Bowling Green and Belmont in the winner's bracket are top-seeded Miami (Ohio) and fourth-seeded Wright State.
Â
Blake Goodnight (Dallas, Texas) was the top performer for the Pirates, tying Bowling Green's Filip Geber after 18 holes. The freshman had five birdies on the afternoon and won the crucial 18th hole to force the tie.
Â
Eli Shah (Newtown Square, Pa.), occupying the top lineup spot for The Hall, fell to Bowling Green's Pedro Garcia, 2&1. After trailing for much of the round, the junior registered victories on holes No. 12 and No. 13 to tie the match. Shah, however, dropped holes No. 14 and No. 15 to fall back down by two before ultimately falling in 17 holes.
Â
After tying the first hole, senior David Lally (Wicklow, Ireland) lost the second hole and never found the equalizer, falling 3&1, to the Falcon's Angelo Luciani. Lally had four birdies through 17 holes.
Â
Will Hennessee (Tulsa, Okla.) also tied the first hole, but then took a lead with a victory in the second hole, and a win on hole No. 4 put him 2UP. Bowling Green's Andrew Lee, however, rallied late going up two holes with four to play. Hennessee rallied with victories on holes No. 15 and No. 16 to tie the match. After a tie on hole No. 17, Lee bested Hennessee with a birdie on No. 18 to win the match, 1UP.
Â
Sophomore Luke Nolan (Austin, Texas) never led against the Falcon's David Chavez, dropping the opening hole, and couldn't pull even. He eventually fell, 3&2, in 16 holes.
Â
George Fricker (Woodbridge, England) and Bowling Green's LT Harris tied the first three holes, but Harris won the next two holes to take the lead. Fricker cut his deficit to one with a victory on hole No. 6, but Harris again extended his advantage to two holes, and eventually three through 14 holes. Fricker fell, 3&1.
