Fricker Leads Pirates Against Queens at Sweetens Cove

SOUTH PITTSBURG, TENN. – George Fricker (Woodbridge, England) won his match, but the Seton Hall men's golf team fell to Queens University, 4-to-2, on day two of the at the Sweetens Cove Intercollegiate, Tuesday.

Fricker had the most convincing effort of the day for The Hall. The graduate student never trailed, wining the first two holes and cruising to a 4&3 victory through 15 holes. Fricker's strong round included six birdies, and he lost only two holes.

As a team, The Hall fell to Queens with a win and two ties, compared to three wins. The Hall will play for seventh place on Wednesday against Northern Kentucky.

Junior Eli Shah (Newtown Square, Pa.) trailed by as many as three holes after six and still trailed by one after 12. The Pirates junior chipped away, however, and won the 13th hole to tie the score before taking a 1UP lead with a victory on No. 16. Queens' Ed Davis rallied late, however, to win the 18th hole though to tie the match.Â

Sophomore Luke Nolan (Austin, Texas) rallied late to tie Queens' Thomas Taylor-Cross through 18 holes. Twice down a hole early, Nolan won holes No. 7 and No. 8 to take a one-hole lead. He led by as many as two holes after a victory on No. 15, but Taylor Cross battled back to win holes No. 16 and No. 17 before the golfers tied the 18th and final hole.

Blake Goodnight (Dallas, Texas) had an early lead against Queens' Peyton Savageau, but dropped the eighth hole to fall into a tie. Savageau won holes No. 9 and No 11 to build a two-hole lead and didn't waver from there winning 2UP.

Senior David Lally (Wicklow, Ireland) dropped the opening hole to Dean Richards and never found the equalizer, falling 2&1 through 17 holes. Lally had a pair of birdies and 13 pars on the afternoon.

Will Hennessee (Tulsa, Okla.) took the lead with a victory on the second hole, and maintained the advantage until Queens' Brad Grajzar won holes No. 11 and No. 12. Grajzar took holes No. 16 and No. 17 to seal the victory, 3&1.

Welcome to the foothills of the Sequatchie Valley, adjacent to Battle Creek in South Pittsburg, Tennessee. Sweetens Cove Golf Club is a public golf course located 30 minutes from Chattanooga in the central time zone.

The course itself presents an entirely unique golfing experience in the Southeastern region of the United States in that it was conceived, designed, and built as an inland links course. Borrowing architectural inspiration from some of the game's greatest layouts, King-Collins crafted a course that is reminiscent of the original version of Augusta National according to renowned golf writer and historian, Anthony Pioppi. In his definitive account of nine-hole golf courses, To The Nines, he wrote, "Sweetens Cove…harkens back to one of the most influential golf courses ever built in the United States [Augusta National]….Collins and his partner, [Tad] King, have embraced the original MacKenzie-Jones tenets with gusto. Writing about Augusta then, MacKenzie could have been describing Sweetens today."

In addition to Seton Hall and host Miami (Ohio), the field included six other teams including:Â Belmont, Bowling Green State, Northern Kentucky, Ohio University, Queens University and Wright State.

Eight teams are playing in a match play tournament. Six golfers will play in each match for each team.
