
Pirates Suffer Heartbreaker in Match's Final Seconds at Delaware

Newark, Del. - After the Seton Hall women's soccer team and Delaware traded goals in the match's first 3:20, the two teams went scoreless for the next 106 minutes until the Blue Hens snuck one past the Pirates with 35 seconds remaining in the second overtime to come away with a 2-1 victory Sunday at Grant Stadium.
The heartbreaking loss overshadows junior Laura Hooper (Watford, England) scoring her first goal of the season, which came just 3:20 into the match. The goal had occurred moments after Delaware scored. When play resumed, the Pirates pushed forward and a cross into the box was went off a Blue Hens player and off of junior Cassy Harrigan (Beaverton, Ore.) before caroming to a wide open Hooper who blasted the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.Â
Turning Point
After the two-goal flurry in the first four minutes, the two teams bent but never broke for the 106 minutes that followed. It all came down to the final overtime as the Blue Hens pressured with five shots in the final six minutes. With under a minute remaining, multiple players were trying to get possession of the ball just outside of the Seton Hall box. Delaware's Dani Kabat took control, curled one way to her right and then came back to avoid a defender and used her left foot to strike one just inside the far right post.

Carroll Field season debut next Sunday, Sept. 29 when the Pirates host Butler in their BIG EAST opener at 1 p.m. The match will be the team's first in the newly renovated field, and it will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network via the BIG EAST Champs Twitter page, Caffeine TV and the BIG EAST YouTube channel.

- Delaware out-shot the Pirates, 34-9, and had 13 shots on goal to Seton Hall's three.
- Delaware also had the bulk of the fouls committed, 20-7.
- Hooper scored her first goal of the season. A transfer from Seattle, she had tallied five goals with the RedHawks in two seasons.
- Harrigan notched her first career assist as well as the team's first assist of the season.
- Freshman goalkeeper Harpa Johannsdottir (Akureyri, Iceland) made a career-high 11 saves.
- This was the eighth all-time matchup between Seton Hall and Delaware. The Blue Hens now lead the series 4-1-3.
- Seton Hall concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 1-5-1 mark.
- The Pirates are now 0-2-1 this season in matches that go into overtime.
