LAST GAME
Junior Desiree Elmore (Hartford, Conn.) and senior Alexis Lewis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) each had 14 points, but the Pirates were out-scored by 21 points in the second half and fell to Georgia Tech, 79-54, in their first game of the Junkanoo Jam yesterday.
Â
Elmore scored 14 points to go with three rebounds. Lewis scored 14 points on the strength of 4-for-8 shooting from three-point range. She also pulled down six rebounds and had three steals. Junior Selena Philoxy (Queens, N.Y.) pulled down a team-best 12 rebounds and had two steals in her first start of the season.
Â
After a first quarter where defense reigned supreme, the teams took turns trading runs in the second. Leading 20-18, the Yellow Jackets scored seven unanswered points and took a commanding 27-18 advantage with only 3:04 left before halftime. The Hall responded with strong defensive sequences on back-to-back Georgia Tech possessions which both resulted in a steal and a subsequent three-pointer by Lewis. A free-throw by Elmore with 1:25 to go before the break pushed Seton Hall's run to 7-0 and cut the Yellow Jackets lead to 27-25.
Â
GT's Kierra Fletcher hit a layup in their final possession of the first half to send the Pirates into halftime with a 29-25 deficit. Both teams shot less than 36% from the floor in the first half. The Pirates held their own on the boards against a monstrous Georgia Tech front line, grabbing only one less rebound. Philoxy had 10 alone.
Â
The second half unfortunately, was a different story for the Pirates. Barbara Johnson (Toronto, Ontario) scored first out of the break to cut The Hall's deficit to two points, but Georgia Tech responded with a 9-0 run to take a 38-27 lead with 6:25 to go in the third quarter. A three-pointer by Mya Jackson (Wilmington, Ohio) brought Seton Hall to within five points, 38-33, but the Yellow Jackets took off again. A 10-2 Georgia Tech run put them in front 48-35 with 0:57 left in the third.
Â
Seton Hall was able to cut the Georgia Tech lead to 10 points, 51-41, heading into the fourth quarter. The Yellow Jackets however, took off on a 14-2 run to open the final period and take a commanding 65-43 lead with 6:28 left to play. The Pirates couldn't cut their deficit to fewer than 18 points the rest of the way.

SCOUTING VANDERBILT
The Commodores are coming off a 7-23 campaign that saw just two wins in 16 games in SEC play. Their season came to an end in the first round of the SEC Tournament, a 74-57 loss to Alabama.
Â
This year, Vanderbilt has won five of their first seven games, but all five of their wins have come at home in Nashville. Their two losses have come to good competition. The Commodores lost at home to No. 4 UConn, 64-51, on Nov. 13, and yesterday against Rutgers. Vanderbilt fell to the Scarlet Knights, 62-56, in their opener of the Junkanoo Jam.
Â
Vanderbilt is led by 6-foot-5 senior center Mariella Fasoula, who is averaging 15.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. She had 17 points and eight rebounds in yesterday's loss.Â
