South Orange, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's tennis team delivered a 7-0 sweep of visiting Fairfield Sunday in its final non-conference match of the season on a gorgeous afternoon at Ivy Hill Park.
Sophomore Anna Fajnorova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and junior Luize Strike (Riga, Latvia) set the tone off the bat with a 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles. Freshman Michal Matson (St. Albans, New Zealand) and freshman Melody Taal (Ede, Netherlands) then secured the point for the Pirates (7-6) with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 flight. Furthermore, freshmen Krista Cerpina (Riga, Latvia) and Anniek Jansen (Naarden, Nethlerlands) paired for a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
At the top singles flight, Strike logged a 6-4, 6-3 win over Fairfield's (3-12) Sarah Stuhlmann, while Fajnorova dispatched Nicole Aragones at the No. 2 spot. Matson and Taal then picked up wins at their respective singles flights before junior Katie Kim (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Cerpina completed the sweep.
"It was incredibly fun for us to finally get to play in front of our fans on our beautiful campus courts," said head coach Riza Zalameda. "We kept our energy up and continued to improve our offensive game. We are looking forward to seeing how it can carry over to next weekend's conference match."
Looking ahead, the Pirates resume BIG EAST play in the final home match of the season, and celebrate Fans & Alumni Day on Sunday, April 9 at 12 p.m. against St. John's. Following the match, there will be an autograph session while friends and families are welcome to play on the courts. Stay tuned to SHUpirates.com for more information on the event.
