West Point, N.Y. - In its opening challenge of the 2016-17 season, the Seton Hall women's tennis team enjoyed a successful three-day competition at the West Point Invitational on the campus of Army West Point. Sophomore Katie Kim (Honolulu, Hawaii) won the D Singles Championship, junior Luize Strike (Riga, Latvia) was runner-up in the A Singles and the tandem of Kim and sophomore Thandy Kangwa (Fort Myers, Fla.) delivered a championship in the B Doubles.
Kim was the No. 5 seed in 29-woman C Singles tournament and came away with straight-set victories in all five of her matches, including the tournament final win over No. 2 seed Destiny Grunin of Fordham.Â
Kim and Kangwa, a strong doubles team last season, continued their strong teamwork, as the No. 4 seed in the B Doubles. After earning a first-round bye, the duo cruised through its quarterfinal match, knocked off the No. 1 seed from Army West Point in the semifinals and then delivered victory with a 6-2 win over the No. 3 seed from Army West Point.
Strike was very strong in A Singles as the No. 4 seed as she knocked off the No. 1 seed Hanna Kantenwein from Boise State, 6-3, 7-6 (15-13) in the semifinals before falling to Binghamton's Michelle Eisenberg, the No. 3 seed, 6-2, 6-3.
The tournament also saw strong performances from Seton Hall freshmen. Melody Taal (Ede, Netherlands) won her first collegiate singles match, defeating Olivia Podsiebieiski from Sacred Heart in A Singles, 6-7 (6-7), 6-3, 10-4. Michal Matson (St. Albans, New Zealand) and Anniek Jansen (Naarden, Netherlands) both won their first singles sets, but ultimately did not win their matches. Jansen went on to win twice in the D Singles consolation round.
The Pirates will next compete the weekend of Oct. 7-9 in Annapolis, Md., as part of a tournament hosted by the United States Naval Academy.
