Cerpina Wins "F" Singles as Pirates Do Well at Navy

Annapolis, Md. - Freshman Krista Cerpina (Riga, Latvia) won the "F" Singles Championship, headling another strong performance by the Seton Hall women's tennis team as the Pirates participated in the 2016 Navy Invitational, held at the Brigade Sports Complex over the weekend.
Cerpina, who received a first-round bye, did not lose a set in the three matches she played en route to the title. In the final, she knocked off Navy's Danika Kahatapitiya, 6-1, 6-1.
In other singles action, juniors Luize Strike (Riga, Latvia) and Katie Kim (Honolulu, Hawai'i) and sophomore Thandy Kangwa (Fort Myers, Fla.) all captured first-round victories in their singles flights. After losing her first-round matchup, freshman Melody Taal (Ede, Netherlands) rebounded with two victories in the consolation bracket of the "C" Singles flight, advancing to the final.
In doubles, Kim and Taal paired up to earn a first-round victory in the "A" flight before falling in the semifinals. After losing their first-round matchup, Kangwa and freshman Anniek Jansen (Naarden, Netherlands) came back to score a consolation round victory.
The Pirates will be back in action this Saturday when they play at Fordham in a rare fall dual match at 12 p.m.
