Pirates beat defending BIG EAST champ Xavier at WVU

Morgantown, Wva. - The Seton Hall men's swimming & diving team made an early statement in the 2016-17 season, defeating three-time defending BIG EAST champion Xavier on Saturday as part of West Virginia quad meet. The Pirates came away with a 231-118 victory over the Musketeers while also dropping a 204-157 decision to the host Mountaineers.Â
The Pirates had first-place finishes in five races, all by freshmen, who are continuing to post a strong start to their collegiate careers. Joshua Tosoni (Arnold, Md.), last week's CollegeSwimming.com BIG EAST Swimmer of the Week, again swept the breaststroke events, winning the 100 in 58.11 and the 200 in 2:05.23. Tyler Kauth (Wall, N.J.) won the 200 backstroke in 1:52.03 and also placed second in the 100 with a time of 51.87. Connor Phillips (Cape Town, South Africa) took the 100 butterfly in 50.82, and Tre Fissella (Lancaster, Pa.) delivered victory in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.99.
Other Pirates runner-up finishes included sophomore Ivan Michalovic (Glen Mills, Pa.) taking second in the 400 IM in a time of 4:09.83; junior Noah Yanchulis placing second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:42.23; junior Vadim Jacobson (Arnold, Pa.) coming in second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:43.50; and sophomore Kyle Nash (Katy, Texas) finishing second in the 200 butterfly in 1:56.22.
The Pirates will be back in the pool the weekend of Oct. 29-30 when they host Providence on the 29th at 1 p.m., and Bucknell on the 30th also at 1 p.m. The Providence meet will be carried live on the Pirate Sports Network.
