Ten Pirates Win Races in Victory at Monmouth

West Long Branch, N.J. - Ten different Pirates scored individual race victories, led by sophomore Lior Grubert (Yehud-Monosson, Israel), who captured both the 100 and 200 backstroke events, junior Noah Yanchulis (Arnold, Md.), who won the 100 freestyle and 200 IM, and freshman Connor Phillips (Cape Town, South Africa) won both the 50 and 200 freestyle, as the Seton Hall men's swimming & diving team defeated Monmouth, 159-93, Tuesday evening at Steadman Natatorium.
With the victory, the Pirates improved to 4-1Â on the young season as they continued their strong start and push towards competing for the BIG EAST championship.
Seton Hall won every race won the evening although the team's final four events were exhibitioned and did not count towards the point totals. Grubert took the 100 backstroke by five-hundredths of a second (53.88) over teammate Chris Tucker (Middletown, N.J.) and then captured the 200 backstroke in a four-second victory (1:57.11) over teammate Michael Mattera (Deer Park, N.Y.). He also teamed up with Zohar Suslovich (Holon, Israel), Matt Zebrowski (Sayreville, N.J.) and Yanchulis to win the 200 medley relay in 1:36.54.Â
Yanchulis raced the 100 freestyle in just 47.16 to score a victory. He also was the first finisher in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.13, the only competitor in the six-man race to finish under two minutes.
Phillips used a very strong finish to take the 200 freestyle by less than a second (1:45.05) over teammate Tyler Kauth (Wall, N.J.). He then swam the 50 freestyle in 22.02 to win by nine-hundredths of a second over teammate John Redoutey (Costa Mesa, Calif.).
In addition, Junior Cody Wimmer (Macungie, Pa.) had a very impressive win in the 1000 freestyle, finishing 19 seconds ahead of five other swimmers in a time of 9:59.03.
