WASHINGTON, D.C. - Fuquan Edwin (Paterson, N.J.) scored 19 of his game-high 24 points in the second half propelling the Seton Hall men's basketball team to a 67-57 victory over Georgetown (11-6, 3-3) at the Verizon Center on Saturday. The Pirates erased a nine point halftime deficit shooting 52.4% (11-21) from the field and 62.5% (5-8) from downtown in the second stanza to snap the Hoyas' 16-game home win streak dating back to last season.
Sterling Gibbs (Scotch Plains, N.J.) scored 11 points and dished out a career-high nine assists, while Eugene Teague (Vineland, N.J.) added 10 points and nine rebounds in his first game back from a concussion suffered on Dec. 27. The 6-foot-9 270-pound center's return ended a 13-game stretch that the Pirates were not at full strength, missing at least one player per contest due to injury.
The victory was Seton Hall's (11-7, 2-3) first at Georgetown since knocking off the Hoyas in overtime on Jan. 29, 2003. It also was Georgetown's first home loss by double digits in over a year (Pittsburgh - 73-48, Jan. 8, 2013) and ended the Hoyas' eight-game win streak at the Verizon Center this season.
Edwin helped set the tone in a furious surge over the final 20 minutes as The Hall outscored Georgetown 41-22 in the second half. The 6-foot-6 swingman buried all four of his 3-point attempts and finished with five triples in the contest. He also recorded four of his five steals in the second half sending the senior in the Seton Hall record book with the career steals record (263). Edwin broke former Pirate standout Dan Callandrillo's (260, 1978-82) mark that stood for over three decades.
Seton Hall torched the nets with 11 threes in the contest, shooting 55.0% from long range against a Hoya squad that entered the game leading the BIG EAST and ranking 12th nationally in 3-point field goal defense (.281). Brian Oliver (Glassboro, N.J.) and Jaren Sina (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) combined to shoot 4-for-5 from three in the first half with each Pirate hitting two to keep The Hall within striking distance. Sina scored all eight of his points in the first period, knocking down all three of his shots. Oliver finished with seven points and five rebounds.
Georgetown's Reggie Cameron set the Pirates back by 10 points with one of his two 3-pointers 47 seconds into the second half. The Hall countered with a 7-0 run to bring the contest back to one possession after a pair of free-throws from Teague and then five straight points from Edwin that he scored within 27 seconds. The Paterson, N.J. native sank his first of four second half threes followed by a layup with 16:01 on the clock to bring the Pirates within 38-35.
The Hall made its decisive offensive surge midway through the half unleashing a 15-3 run over an eight minute stretch to take its largest lead of the game. Teague posted nine of his 10 points in the stanza, including the layup with 9:23 remaining which began the run and gave the Pirates a lead they would not relinquish (50-49). Edwin hit the next three Seton Hall field goals, all 3-pointers, to shift momentum to Seton Hall's side.
Edwin's fifth three of the game came at 4:21 and put the Pirates on top 60-51. Two minutes later Gibbs sank consecutive free-throws to give The Hall an 11-point cushion.
On the day he set the program's all-time steals mark, Edwin also cracked the top-10 for Seton Hall's career 3-point field goals made list (145). He is one of only four players in Pirate history to rank in the top-10 of both career charts.
Sophomore guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera led Georgetown with 14 points and junior forward Mikael Hopkins had a double-double (11 points, 15 rebounds). A stingy Pirate defensive effort limited one of the most consistent field goal shooting teams in the BIG EAST to a 34.0% field goal mark. The Hoyas entered the contest second in the conference shooting 48.5% from the field.
Seton Hall wraps up its three-game road stretch at St. John's on Thursday. Tip-off is 7 p.m. for the nationally televised contest on CBS Sports Network. The Hall's radio broadcast with Gary Cohen and Dave Popkin can be heard on 970 AM (WNYM).
