FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - The Seton Hall men's golf team will return to the links this weekend for three rounds of golf as part of the 2013 Doc Gimmler at Bethpage State Park.
The field will compete on Bethpage's Red Course, a par-70, 7,014-yard course that opened in 1933. The Red Course's neighboring Black Course has twice hosted the U.S. Open and The Barclays's in 2012. In addition to Seton Hall and host St. John's, the participating schools include: Columbia, Florida Southern, Harvard, IUPUI, Johnson & Wales, Loyola Marymount, Marquette, Princeton, St. Thomas Aquinas, Temple, U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy and Yale. The teams will play two rounds on Saturday and one on Sunday.
The name of this tournament was changed to "The Doc Gimmler," from "The McLaughlin," to honor the St. John's long-time golf coach who led the Red Storm to nine BIG EAST titles in the conference's first 11 years.
It has been six years since Seton Hall has participated in this event. In 2007, the Pirates placed fourth among 18 competing teams. Kyle Morris tied for ninth among all individual golfers at 1-over-par. During the tournament, Ryan Castanet hit a 3-under-par, 67, in the third round, which remains the lowest single-round for a par-70 course in Seton Hall history.
Seton Hall is coming off an 11th place finish at the fall season-opening Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate two weeks ago. Junior Derrick Kim (New City, N.Y.) and sophomore Kevin Sanislo (Whippany, N.J.) led the Pirates at 10-over-par.
The Pirates will be bringing Kim, L.J. Go (Guadalupe Cebu City, Philippines), Cory Wilson (Newton, N.J.), JT Harper (Pebble Beach, Calif.) and David Cha (Carrollton, Texas) to Farmingdale this weekend. Senior Gary Dunne (Wicklow, Ireland) will compete as an individual.
Results will be available after each day's competition has been completed at www.SHUpirates.com.
